Battle of the Books

battle of the booksBattle of the Books returns to Manning!

This Battle will provide opportunities for 7th and 8th grade students to have a literary battle with their peers.  BOB is an extra-curricular activity.  Participation is not required.

In BOB, students make up teams of three.  They will decide how they want to cover the book list.  Students are encouraged to read all 10 books on the book list, however, each team member must read a minimum of 5 books in order to participate. Student, keep in mind that the more books each team member reads, the better your team will be able to answer questions in the Battle(s).  Students should take notes as they read or write chapter summaries to help them remember the details of the books.  They will be able to refer to their notes during the Battles.

We will have a series of Pre-Battles, where Manning teams Battle against each other. Parents are welcome to attend all Battles.  A schedule will be communicated once we have one finalized. This year’s Relay Battle is expected to take place around January 26, 2017.

If your child is interested in competing in the Battle of the Books at Manning, these are your next 3 steps:

  • He or She needs to find 2 other teammates that are committed to reading and competing in the Battles. Teams who are prepared for battle will register later in the semester as well. Check back here for the registration form at that time.
  • They need to come up with a team name. In the past teams have dressed up for their competition to match their name.  This is not required, but it can add to the fun.
  • Start reading! The book list is below.
An Informational Meeting for Battle of the Books will be held on Friday, September 16th during Access, 2:30-3:00pm in the Manning Library.  This meeting is intended for students, however, parents are welcome to attend or email questions to Jennifer Black @
